Control of respiration is unstable in the neonate, especially the pre-term neonate, owing to immaturity of the respiratory centre in the brainstem and immaturity of chemoreceptor responses. Causes include prematurity, hypoxia, sepsis, acidosis, meningitis, intraventricular haemorrhage, patent ductus arteriosus, hypoglycaemia, hypermagnesaemia, sedatives, hyperthermia, convulsions, and rough handling. Obstructive apnoea: Babies are obligatory nose breathers and if their nares are obstructed, they are prone to severe apnoea. Causes include choanal atresia, secretions milk, meconium, blood, mucus ; lodged in the upper airway, micrognathia, macroglossia, and gastro-oesophageal reflux. Reflex apnoea or vagally-mediated apnoea is due to suction of pharynx or stomach, passage of nasogastric tube, gastro-oesophageal reflux, overfeeding, endotracheal intubation and requip. 3. Before filling the prescription, the pharmacy will call iPledge to get approval. All caregivers, especially women who are or could become pregnant, should wear gloves when handling retinoic acid. Also wear gloves when handling urine, stool, and vomit during chemotherapy and for 48 hours afterward. Urine, stool, and vomit can be safely disposed of in septic tanks and the sewer system. Any clothing or bed linens that are contaminated with urine, stool, or vomit should be washed separately from other laundry in hot water and detergent. Anyone handling the contaminated laundry should wear gloves. To prevent sunburn, wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Do not use sun lamps and tanning beds.
