We examined information from numerous sources to compile a list of major asbestos litigation defendants that have incurred and or were expected to incur substantial asbestos-related liabilities and have filed for bankruptcy. Table D.1 presents our list of asbestos-related bankruptcy filings from 1982 through summer 2004. As we noted in Chapter Six, this list should be interpreted as asbestos defendants that have filed for bankruptcy, and not necessarily companies driven into bankruptcy by asbestos. The table lists only one name for each corporate bankruptcy, regardless of the number of subsidiaries or related companies involved in the bankruptcy. Several names that frequently appear in discussions of asbestos-related bankruptcies are not included in the table for that reason.
