Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug NSAID ; derived from propionic acid, ibuprofen has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. It is commonly used in humans for short-term management of pain and fever and for long-term control of arthritic pain. It comes in various strengths. For over-the-counter use, it is available in 50- and 100-mg capsules or tablets often chewable ; and 20- and 40-mg ml liquids for children, and in 200-mg tablets and capsules for adults. Prescription-strength tablets are 400, 600, and 800 mg. Ibuprofen also can be found combined with other medications such as pseudoephedrine hydrochloride or hydrocodone bitartrate. Common brand names of ibuprofen preparations include Addvil Wyeth ; , Midol Bayer HealthCare ; , and Motrin McNeil Consumer ; , although ibuprofen also is available in many generic formulations.1 In humans, ibuprofen taken at standard dosages appears to have a wide margin of safety. In general, there are fewer side effects than with similarly dosed aspirin.1 However, in dogs, cats, and ferrets, ibuprofen has a narrow margin of safety and is a frequent toxicosis reported to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center APCC ; . In one review of ASPCA APCC data on calls reporting generic drug exposures in dogs and cats, ibuprofen was the most common drug involved.2 Dogs were the animals most commonly poisoned by ibuprofen, and most exposures were acute--usually the result of ingestion of numerous tablets after a dog chewed open a bottle ASPCA APCC Database: Unpublished data, 20012003 ; . Some ibuprofen formulations have a sweet coating and are readily eaten by dogs. In some cases, ibuprofen was administered to pets in the mistaken belief that it was safer than aspirin ASPCA APCC Database: Unpublished data, 20012003.
There are a number of different roles psychologists may be asked to undertake in divorce and child custody cases. Because the decisions in these cases affect numerous lives for many years to come, they should be truly based on "the best interest of the child" as determined, preferably, by the parents. If they cannot agree, then input should be sought from those professionals best equipped to do the kind of assessment that will yield the data a judge needs to approve, or if necessary, to formulate a wise parenting and visitation plan. A psychologist may be approached to - serve as the child's therapist and or the family's therapist; - conduct a custody evaluation and submit a report to the court; - do a mediation between the separating partners; - serve as an expert witness who provides information on such topics as child development, children's needs and reactions to divorce, and the impact of continuing parental conflict vs. cooperation on the children. In the APA Code of Ethics 1992 ; we are cautioned not to practice beyond our competence. To shift between the four roles mentioned above, one would have to be trained and well qualified in each of the functions they assume. Even if the clinician, mediator, forensic expert, or child custody evaluator is multifaceted in competence, it is NOT prudent to undertake more than one role in any given case. At the risk of being personal, let me illustrate very specifically. If I have been the therapist for a couple who originally presented ostensibly seeking marital therapy, who then decide they want to get divorced rather than stay together, and they choose to mediate rather than to litigate, I can not become their mediator, even if they express a strong desire for me to do so. Although therapy and mediation share some common goals, such as being concerned about fairness and an equitable solution and empowering the parties and spironolactone. Discount Drugs
Several writers have turned to German or Sanskrit to find more appropriate words, but these have largely been ignored. More notable terms are peak experiences, a term popularized by the psychologist Abraham Maslow; altered states, popularized by the psychologist Charles Tart; alternative states, coined by Norman Zinberg; and cosmic experience, popularized in William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience. The latest term proposed comes from the team of Ruck, Bigwood, Staples, Ott and Wesson, writing in the January-June \919 Journal of Psychedelic Drugs. They feel strongly that "not only is 'psychedelic' an incorrect verbal formulation, but it has become so invested with connotations of the pop-culture of the 1960s that it is incongruous to speak of a shaman's taking a 'psychedelic' drug." They offer entheogen, calling it a new term that would be appropriate for describing states of shamanic and ecstatic possession induced by ingestion of mind-altering drugs. In Greek the word entheos means literally "god theos ; within, " and was used to describe the condition that follows when one is inspired and possessed by the god that has entered one's body. It was applied to prophetic seizures, erotic passion and artistic creation, as well as to those religious rites in which mystical states were experienced through the ingestion of substances that were transsubstantial with the deity. Combining this Greek root with gen, "which denotes the action of 'becoming, ' " they argue further for the suitability of entheogen: Our word sits easily on the tongue and seems quite natural in English. We could speak of entbeogenr or, in an adjectival form, of entheogemc plants or substances. In a stria sense, only those vision-producing drugs that can be shown to have figured in shamanic or religious rites would be designated entheogens, but in a looser sense, the term could also be applied to other drugs, both natural and artificial, that indite alterations of consciousness similar to those documented for ritual ingestion of traditional entheogens. After being around for a couple of years, the term entheogen has entered the ethnobotanical literature and is about to be included in the Oxford English Dictionary. So far as popular usage is concerned, it doesn't seem to sit as easily on the tongue as orginally claimed. For now, the term psychedelic, even if a little shabby and cheapened by overuse, will have to do. It is commonly understood, and since 1976 it has been included in the Addenda to Webster's Third International Dictionary. Here, with illustrations, is Webster's perception of this book's theme and clomipramine.
